What Causes Snoring?

Snoring is a common condition that many people across the globe struggle with. It happens when airflow through the mouth and nose is partially blocked during sleep. The sound of snoring is produced by the vibration of the tissues in the throat, including the uvula and soft palate. There are several factors that could cause extreme snoring such as:

Sleep Position: Sleeping on your back can increase the likelihood of snoring. In this position, the tongue and soft palate are more likely to collapse to the back of the throat, partially blocking the airway.

Obesity: Excess body weight, particularly around the neck, can put pressure on the airway and cause an individual to snow. These fatty deposits around their throat can narrow the airway, making it more likely to collapse during sleep.

Nasal Congestion: Any type of blockage in the nasal passages from congestion leads to mouth breathing during sleep, which can cause snoring. Keeping allergies under control will help to prevent airway blockages.

Anatomy: The natural anatomy of an individual's throat and airway can may also play a role in snoring. For example, a low, thick, soft palate or enlarged tonsils and adenoids can contribute to snoring.
